25 Jan 2016: Walking 6 miles at Buffalo Bayou

Today my husband and I went for a long walk.  A six-mile, two-hour long walk to be more specific.   While I’ve been training now for 3 months to learn how to run, my husband walks on the treadmill in the mornings.  So we rarely have the opportunity to work out together.

My husband has been wanting to walk the trails at Buffalo Bayou in Houston as they’ve been improved and added to in the last couple of years. New pedestrian bridges have been added, separate walking and biking trails have been put in and it looks pretty nice whenever we drive by.

The weather was warm, in the high 60s and my husband found a map on www.mapmyrun.com that showed a 5-mile loop.  I agreed to go, but I really wanted to do 6 miles so that I can say I’ve completed my first training day for May’s Tinkerbell 10k.  (All of my runs to date have been 5k training runs.)  So off we went… and it was great!  While most of my runs have been on the track at the YMCA where it is very flat or the treadmill, the Buffalo Bayou walking trails have some hills and it was nice to be outside in the sun.

When we finished the 5-mile loop, we walked a little further and then turned back towards our car.  I checked my phone when we reached the car and we walked for 2.01 hours and covered 6.03 miles!  Perfect!  Now I know that 2 hours is the most time it will take me to “run” a 10k!!  Watch out SIS — I’m in training!
