Running

24 Jan 2016: My tights shopping experience and running the Bayou

On Friday I headed out to buy new full length running tights.  It was not a good experience.  First I tried Athleta.  The store had lots of good cross-over clothing, which to me is clothing that can be worn as regular clothing or used for gym workouts, but it was a bust for full length running tights.  There was only one option and because I’m NOT a skinny mini…there were no plain black tights in my size.  The clerk tried to get me to try on all sorts of capris and didn’t seem to get it that I wanted full length tights.  So I left empty handed.

The next closest store was Lululemon.  I’ve heard lots of good things about this store and their products (despite the see-through tights debacle from a few years ago).  This was also a bust.  The store actually had several good options but since I’m not six feet tall in addition and NOT a skinny mini, the options were limited.  Most of the tights were lighter weight and the heavier weight option left several inches of tights bunching up on my ankles or even the larges were too tight (and I usually wear a medium).   What a waste of time!

So I decided to just use an old pair of Nike yoga pants that are almost 10 years old for Saturday’s run.  I swear that I should have bought 5 pairs of these Nike Yoga pants instead of just the 2 that I have.  They have worked well over the years for traveling on long range flights, for workout gear as well as for running errands on the weekend and are still in pretty good shape after 10 years!

But what about my run??  Saturday’s running clinic was good.  I didn’t set my alarm so I woke up with only 15 minutes to get dressed and get to the store.  I grabbed a quick bite to eat in the car (wheat toast, peanut butter with a little honey and my water bottle), and fortunately Coach Joan was still talking about the day’s run when I arrived.   The goal was 3 miles along Houston’s Buffalo Bayou.  I departed the store with the run/walkers and thought our run was supposed to start when we reached the bayou (using the walk over to the Bayou as our warm-up).  But I was wrong.  Part of the 3 miles was the walk over and back, so my first mile pace was over 15 minutes.   I started jogging when I reached the bayou trail and despite the cold, picked up the pace for Miles 2 and 3 (closer to a 14 minute pace).  I’m not getting much faster but I definitely am feeling more confident, breathing easier and recovering faster.
