Running

17 August 2016: Definitely still summer out there

Summers in Houston are not for the faint-hearted.  We had a week of 100 degree days, 90+ percent humidity and generally miserably hot weather.  Now the weather has turned to rain, rain and more rain.  How is one supposed to keep running in this type of weather?

The good news is that I’ve made it to the last 2 weeks of my Saturday running clinic.  I can’t claim that my running is any good or that I’m making any progress….but at least I went.  The first of the 2 Saturdays, we went about 4 miles and I probably walked at least 2 of them.  I completed drained my water bottle, I cursed at my “coach” but I completed the run.  Kathyrn was with me every step of the way and we managed to keep together to the finish.  Thank goodness for running buddies.

This past week, we did a hill workout.  Funny that I’ve been working out with Luke’s Locker on Saturdays since January and its the first time that I’ve done the dreaded DePelchin Hill Workout!  What is this workout you ask?   We basically run about a mile to near DePelchin Children’s Center, then you look for the largest hill in the area.   We ran up the hill, then down a few sidewalks and then up the hill again.  We repeated this until our Coach said we were done.  But SURPRISE!!!   I just thought we were done.  Apparently that was just a break.  She made us do it all over again!  I didn’t go as far the second time but I did complete the workout.  Then mostly everyone walked back to the shop.  I ended up jogging a short portion of the return trip, but I can’t claim victory as it wasn’t really much of a job (maybe a wog?? or maybe a woggle??).

Yesterday, I worked out at the YMCA completing Week 3, Workout 1 of the Couch to 5k workout.  Remember over a month ago when I challenged myself to start the C25K from the beginning?  Well – look how far I’ve come in 2 months.  I’m on Week 3.   The best that I can hope for is that I’m not losing too much of my abilities and that it will be easier to come back in the fall when the weather cools down.  Until then, I’ll keep plugging along.
