16 April 2016: Speed drills

Today was a really difficult workout at the running clinic.  It is the second week of the new 9 to 5 class, and Coach Joan pushed us hard.

We started out jogging over to the West Gray Recreation Center park.  I ran with Kathryn and we ran (well…jogged) the entire way over to the park without stopping!  It was the first time that either of us has done that.  Usually its a combination of walking and jogging.  After some warm-up drills (which weren’t easy either), we broke up into teams of 3 for speed drills.  The walking track at the park is about 1/4 mile so we basically ran a constant relay, with each leg about 220 yards.  The goal was to run each leg as fast as you can, then recover while your other 2 teammates run their legs, one runner at a time.  Every 2 times you run, you complete an entire lap (a 1/4 mile).

For my group, Kathryn and I ran with one of the guys.  Bad move!  This guy, Randy, was pretty fast, so we didn’t get much recovery time between runs.  We ran the drills for about 20 minutes and my team completed 5 rotations.  It just about killed me!  I think that today was the fastest that I’ve ever run and I’m sure that I will be sore in the morning.

With the 1/2 mile over to the Park, about 5/8 miles at the park doing speed drills and a 1/2 mile back — I only ran a little over 1.5 miles today.  Looks like I’ll need to make up some mileage tomorrow.
