5 Nov 2016: The dreaded hill training at Depelchin

Today at my Saturday training class, we ran the dreaded Depelchin hill.  I don’t know why I hate this workout so much!   I know that many runners train on hills, partly because there are many towns that have hills…but its so flat here in Houston.   I have a hard enough time running on flats so when I add a hill or two into my run – I just want to collapse!

We ran from the store over to Depelchin.  Its about a mile to get there.  I felt good on the run over and I’ve been surprised lately when I’m one of the first 6 or 7 people to get to wherever we’re going to train.  For so long I’ve been in the middle of the pack and now I’m inching up to just behind the good runners.  I can’t wait until I can run with Julie or one of the other faster runners one day.

The training was a moderate hill at moderate pace and then a steeper hill at a faster pace.  It was difficult to pick up speed for the steeper hill and I was breathing very hard each time.  Then we could either walk or run back to the start.  Coach Joan timed us for about 20 minutes and then let us take a break.  Coach wanted us to do it again for 15 or 20 minutes, but we ended up only doing the second run for 10 minutes.  Thank goodness because my quads were burning.

Then a short run/walk to the store and the workout was over.
