Friday Five 2.0 is hosted by bloggers Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness. This week’s topic is “Spring fitness goals”.
This is an easy topic because I’ve already blogged about my 2018 running goals. So it’s probably a perfect time to update you on how I’m doing so far.
2018 Goals:
- PR in a 5k: DONE. I PR’d during the Houston Wellness Project 5k on January 28th. I also placed 3rd in my age group and ran the entire 5k without a single walk break (yay me!).
- PR in a 10k: Still working on this one. I have a 10k coming up at the end of the month. Wish me luck!
- Run at least 365 miles this year: Currently I’ve logged 62.6 miles, so I’m 17% complete on this one. The summer is the time that will be the most difficult to get in the miles. I hate running in Houston in the summer!
Through Spring, however, I would REALLY like to PR my 10k during the Rodeo Run on February 24th. I think it is achievable because I’ve been running faster lately and my time to beat is 1:23:29 (Pace 13:26). I’ve been averaging paces between 12 and 12:30 for some time now, but that’s been for 3 miles – not 6. Also I hope that the weather won’t be too warm. It’s been in the 80s the past few days and if the weather is over 70 degrees it’s likely to be a slow hot race. I don’t do well running in warmer weather.
I would like to see some improvement in Spring from my training sessions with USA Fit. It is my first time regularly adding hill training and speed training to my workouts. I should be improvement but just running more often is still necessary for me.
I have been adding more hills to my running routes as well. I hope that will pay off in my upcoming marathon. Congrats on PRing in the 5k. I’m sure you PR for a 10k is just around the corner. Keep at it. You got this!
Looks like you’re making great progress! I guess running in Houston would be comparable to running in Chicago (where I live) in the winter! No one wants to do either…
Wendy – So true! You get some of our same heat though in August. (My sis went to Northwestern.). Our summer just lasts a lot longer – from May to October!
Looks like you’ve already made some great progress on your goals! And it sounds like you’re going to crush that 10k!
Jessy – I hope so. I’m praying for cooler weather though or at least lower humidity.
Summer is the hardest time for me to log long runs as well. Just too humid. I am loving the winter running right now though.
So true…I used to live in MD and July/Aug humidity was the worst…until I moved to Houston! Ugghh…
My son and I participated in all the Run Houston races last year. If you need a good 10K after the oppressive Houston summer, give the Sugar Land one a shot. I all but quit running each summer – it’s just too hot and humid. Good luck on your goals!
Good idea…I stopped running last summer but I am determined to keep it up this year. That’s why one of my 2018 goals is 365 miles. It won’t be achievable unless I keep running this summer!
